Just south of Bend is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. First stop was the trail through the 6177 acre lava field formed by Lava Butte. This type of basaltic lava is called "a a" and is characterized by its rough and jagged shape when cooled. The peaks of the Cascades loom in the background.
We drove to the top of Lava Butte
