In the desert, we traveled to the Painted Hills of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. As the name implies, the surrounding hills appear to be painted with many different colors.
The red color comes from oxidized rusty iron minerals. The golden color comes from a mix of oxidized magnesium and iron. Black hash marks are rich with manganese.
